UNMUTED is a 4-episode anthology docuseries, which features women fighting to overcome tremendous obstacles and inspires viewers to join organized efforts and calls to action to improve the lives of women across the globe. You can watch a trailer for the docuseries here.
FGM is a male oriented deep-rooted tradition passed down by mothers through generations, ensuring a girl/woman is not promiscuous, ensures a girl’s marriageability and is considered a right of passage within the community. Our small, all female film crew traveled to Uganda & Kenya to film with communities who still practice this tradition, despite FGM being made illegal. Back in the USA, we follow Dr. Marci Bowers, the world's leading gender affirming surgeon, as she performs clitoral restoration surgery pro-bono for victims of FGM.
We invited actress Constance Wu to be part of the episode and guide you through the stories of Eliza in Kenya and Renee in the US, both of whom were cut at a young age.
UNMUTED is executive-produced by Yvette Nicole Brown and Charlotte Lubert.
UNMUTED partners with nonprofits and NGOs to join in calls to action with every episode. For this episode, we are working with Reproductive Health Uganda who works with Eastern Ugandan religious leaders, tribe elders, cultural leaders and the local government to end the practice of FGM. We are also working with Sahiyo, whose mission is to end the practice of female genital cutting, enable a culture in which a woman/girl’s body and female sexuality is not feared or suppressed but embraced as normal., and recognize and emphasize the values of consent and a child/woman’s right over her own body. The awareness and press about FGM have been memoirs of people who endured this practice and have not created an organized call to action.
By contributing to this campaign, you will help create a docuseries which will raise awareness regarding this human rights violation, inspire hope by focusing on the positive strides being made, and implement a robust impact campaign to engage people throughout the USA and make lasting change.
